So the reigning Gabilan Division co-champion Cowboys lost a record-setting quarterback and a 1,000 yard tailback, who might have been even better on defense -- not to mention 11 other starters.
Don't feel too sorry for Salinas.
The program isn't in a rebuilding mood.
That began a decade ago when Steve Goodbody took the reins as the head coach.
When you've made seven straight playoff appearances, including a CCS Division I finals appearance last fall, the cupboard is never completely bare.
Never underestimate a program with confidence.
There are enough parts for Salinas to make another postseason run.
Quarterback Matt Castaneda looked sharp over the summer in passing tournaments. He knows the system, has an accurate arm, and is agile enough to take off if the pocket collapses.
He has two sure-handed targets in Kevin Crosby and Jacob Rivera, who combined for 65 catches for nearly 800 yards last season.
The return of all-league linebacker Kyle Martorella solidifies a defense that at times bent, but didn't break last fall, along with defensive back Jack Shuler.
Defending their share of the Gabilan Division title will be a tall order. But this is a playoff caliber team that will have 90-plus players on their roster.
