There is always mixed emotions leaving a position that has engulfed more than half your life.
Coaching baseball at Salinas for more than a quarter of a century was Art Hunsdorfer's dream job.
Fulfilling higher goals, though, means a change.
After 26 years -- the last 17 as the Cowboys head baseball coach -- Hunsdorfer made it official on Monday -- stepping down to take a position on the Cabrillo College baseball staff.
"It just fell into my lap,'' Hunsdorfer said. "It's always been a desire to move up to the college level. I wasn't looking. But I felt it was time when the opportunity presented itself.''
Hunsdorfer's decision effects two sports at Salinas as he will also step aside as an assistant varsity football coach, because of fall ball at the collegiate level in baseball.
In 17 years as the Cowboys head baseball coach, Hunsdorfer took them to the postseason 15 times, including the last 10 years.
