Palma-San Benito football

Friday's game
Palma (8-0) at San Benito (4-4), 7:30 p.m.
The Balers have been outstanding in the month of November over the last two years with a 7-2 record, including two trips to the Central Coast Section Division I finals.
The two losses during San Benito's run, though, have come from the Chieftains, who are 16-0 since the Gabilan Division was formed.
Ironically, during Palma's run of CCS Division I titles in 2001 and 2002, it suffered one loss in each of those magical seasons -- both times from San Benito.
Where would Palma be without sophomore tailback Emilio Martinez, who has rushed for over 1,100 yards and accounted for 20 touchdowns his year?
Martinez's emergence this fall has allowed quarterback Jack Richardson to develop. In his last three games, the 6-foot-4 junior is 31-of-37 for 581 yards and six touchdowns.
The heart of the Chieftains, however, is the defense, which didn't allow a point last week in shutting down Monterey, and has given up 60 points all year -- 35 of which came in one game.
R.J. Clark had combined for over 1,000 yards rushing and passing for San Benito, having accounted for 14 touchdowns. As a team, the Balers have outscored the opposition 204-13
Don't be mislead by San Benito's 4-4 record. Two last second losses and an overtime loss could have gone the other way. In other words, the Balers could be 7-1.
