Pacific Grove-Carmel boys hoops

Once again the Breakers had their traditional horrific non-league start, opening the year with eight straight losses.
All that means is that Pacific Grove is battle tested for the Mission Trail Athletic League season, where it's never missed the postseason under head coach Dan Powers.
The defending three-time MTAL champion Padres, who host Pacific Grove tonight, struggled as well in the preseason with just two wins.
Both teams can chalk up the slow starts to strong non-league opponents and not having the core of their teams for the first month of the season because of the football playoffs.
That is no longer an excuse.
While both teams have two of the more dynamic players in the MTAL in reigning league MVP John Stivers of Carmel and sharpshooter Luke Lowell of Pacific Grove, defense will dictate the tempo.
Last year 39 points won two of the three battles.
Carmel doesn't have one senior that starts while Pacific Grove's roster has three freshmen and four sophomores.
