Arguably the best sporting event of the year came last winter when Alisal and Alvarez faced each other in a memorable postseason overtime shootout in boys soccer.
Emotions were left on the field as a high school record soccer crowd filled Salinas High Stadium in an epic battle.
The two teams are now league rivals. And guess what? But are good -- good enough to think CCC title going into tonight's battle at Alvarez.
Alvarez hasn't received the same attention as the nationally ranked Trojans have, in part because Alisal had a record run of 58 straight games without a loss in regulation.
Plus the Trojans have won the last four meetings between the rivals.
Ironically both teams have losses to nationally ranked Palos Verdes this year.
None of that matters at this point.
Alisal has outscored opponents 21-4 in its seven wins, but has given up four goals in two losses and a tie this season.
The Trojans scoring has been balanced with five players with two or more goals, including Benito Chavez. Jose Alamo has triggered Alvarez's attack.
