CCS playoff format

I've seen enough to realize that 'A' league football teams DO NOT belong in the CCS Division IV playoffs for football.
The last four Division IV champions have been teams that play in an 'A' league.
There is a reason leagues are graded.
Seldom does a 'C' league team match up with an 'A' league team in the postseason.
It's not hard to figure out why?
So why allow them do drop?
I'm tired of hearing about state ramifications or enrollment figures.
An 'A' league team should never be allowed to drop any lower than Division III. That way you can keep your state dreams alive.

Not that I disagree wtih you, but your last sentence in the post does raise this issue. Suppose CCS changed their rules so that A league teams could not be in D4. What you are then going to run into regarding the possibility of the D4 winner going to a state play-in game is the "strength of schedule" question. CIF Commisioners would have a difficult time voting in a CCS D4 winner if that winner had (by the structure of the CCS play-offs) avoided playing the tough teams. Beating small B and C league teams and winning a D4 championship won't do much for the D4 winner's resume when similar sized schools from A leagues have been forced to play in another CCS division.

There is a proposal by a poster on norcalpreps that passed it on to a coach(proposals have to be made by a coach or admin to be consonsidered). It would protect the smaller smaller schools some from Palmas and VCs and the WCALs. In most years a good PG or Carmel should be able to compete with a SHP. This was a very good SHP team, but PG had no defense. Total overmatched in that respect. Some years there is going to be a very good team come through the small schools - Carmel has had some. This PG team had a huge flaw-no defense and when they went against a team that played defense- it was disastrous for them. My thought though is why change it? It is a way to test aganst the better teams...In most years SHP is good, but this was a good team. Believe it or not but if SHP does get the bowl play-in, they will probably lose by a similar margin and maybe worse next week. PG now has a benchmark on where they can be as far as level of play.

Hate to disagree with NorCal but if the past five CCS D4 Championhips are any indication, small public schools are having a tough time competing against small private schools. (Those privates also being members of A leagues.) Carmel won in 2009, but then it was SHP in 2010, Palma in 2011 and SHP in both 2012 plus 2013.

With just 8 seniors on this year's SHP D4 title team, the only hope the small publics have next year is if SHP ends up in the Open Division and Palma wins the Gabilan.

Feels like it is going to be many/several years before the small public schools in CCS will be able to win against the best small private schools.

oh god here we go. Why punish the small private schools and make them go against large public and privates. If a C league team cant beat an A league team in CCS they have no reason to be in a state play in game period. Lets say that SHP wasnt in DIV and say carmel or PG had won the title. Then if that winner had been selected to go to a state play in game they would be embarrassed by a far better team. IF you want to force A league teams that should be in D4 into D3 then D4 should be eliminated from regional play in game consideration.
Would this even be a discussion if PG had played SHP tough and it was a close game? I dont think so...The crying over bad teams getting beat by better teams in the playoffs is getting old.

JD you complain a lot about the playoffs. So I think you should come up with your own format of the playoffs to make things fair in ur eyes. I would really like to see what you could come up with then we can all critique you like you do for the current CCS format.

I agree with Bobby Wreight...plus the section has already made it tough for the WCAL and Palma (if they win league probably won't move down). Question is - do you think Carmel or PG would have opted out of the norcal state bowl play-in game if either won the game? Carmel even scheduled Palma this year early in the season to play a private school team. If you can say these schools would opt out of the bowl, then maybe there is a case-but no indication they would.

If you look at the past five years, it's true that Privates won D4, but in 2010 Carmel had SHP on the ropes before losing and were competitive (i.e. might have been much closer with a few breaks) with Palma in the D4 title game. I think most schools, and certainly most kids, want to challenge themselves by playing elite teams when they have an opportunity. A D4 without Privates would seem watered down in my opinion.
