Having attended 121 49ers games at The Stick, I've got a few memories stored in the bank to share over the 17 week regular season as the days of Candlestick Park are coming to a close.
The 49ers brought Jerry Rice home, signing him to a one-day contract, then allowing him to announce his retirement on Nov. 19, 2006 at halftime against the Seahawks.
The 49ers won that game 20-14 as Frank Gore rushed for 212 yards while Alex Smith was 11-25 for 165 yards and a touchdown.
The defense forced five turnovers, while holding former league MVP Shaun Alexander to 37 yards on 17 carries in front of nearly 70,000 fans.
The place was buzzing, perhaps for the first time since Rice left as a Niner.
Yet, what I remember most about that game was Rice's speech, particularly his last sentence when he asked Steve Young to throw him one more pass.
While both were in suit and ties, Young sent Rice on a post pattern at the 35-yard line, hitting him in stride in the end zone for one last spike.
Priceless.
