Central Coast Section playoffs
Division IV
Saturday's game
No. 5 Monterey (8-3) at No. 1 Sacred Heart Prep (10-1), 1 p.m.
The Gators only setback all season was a 29-15 loss to Open Division top seed Terra Nova.
The two teams are 3-0 against common opponents with Sacred Heart beating Menlo 10-3 two weeks ago and Monterey opening the Division IV playoffs with a 30-12 win over Menlo.
Both the Toreadores and Sacred Heart defeated Salinas and Seaside this year.
The similarities in these two teams continues as both do most of their damage offensively on the ground. The Gators Ricky Grau and Andrew Segre have combined for over 1,700 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Grau appears to be a game breaker, averaging nearly eight yards a crack for Sacred Heart while Segre has nearly 500 receiving yards. Quarterback Mason Randall has 102 passing rating when called upon.
What's impressive about the Gators is their defense, which has not allowed a point in three games, and has held eight opponents to a touchdown or less.
Jason Berring and Akili Jones have formed a nice combination in the backfield for Monterey, having piled up nearly 1,800 yards on the ground.
Anchored by seniors Brandon Finona and Logan Hunter, the Toreadores defense has allowed 21 or more points in a game just three times all season.
