Icing the kicker

Can you imagine an NBA coach calling time out just before the opponent is about to shoot his free throw with the game on the line?
That's what NFL coaches keep doing to freeze kickers before a field goal attempt late in games.
Time outs are literally called as the center snaps the ball.
I have a hard time finding the sportsmanship in it.
