Benavente going pro

A simple tryout was more of an excuse to visit a foreign country. Yet, before 2003 Notre Dame High graduate Serena Benavente left Germany, she had a two-year contract to play pro basketball — becoming the first female athlete in Monterey County to play pro basketball.
No, it's not the WNBA. And the pay will be nothing more than pocket change. But Benavente will have free room and board and all meals and transportation paid for — just to play basketball.
And she gets to spend four months in Heidelberg, Germany, as well as teach younger kids the game. Not a bad deal for a 23-year-old point guard on two surgically repaired knees.
