Here's an ironic twist. Carmel is averaging 49 points a game in the Mission Trail Athletic League. The last time it beat Pacific Grove for 'The Shoe' in 2002, is scored 49 points.
Do you believe in omens?
Here's one more. The last name of the quarterback on the Padres 2002 team was named Johnston. And it was played at Carmel.
Carmel hasn't won a title outright in 45 years. Which means it's never beaten Pacific Grove when a title was on the line.

I'm an old fart and way back when we beat PG every year, once when the title was on the line. We won 19 straight games over a three year period and won two titles and a second. There actually was a time when Carmel dominated, but there was also a time that dinosaurs roamed up and down Ocean Avenue. And 67 years? Jesus, am I ever old.
