Having the Salinas Jaycees all-star football game played during the school season was a smart move.
My only question is why Jan. 9?
For some kids, that's two months after their seasons have ended. And it's in the heart of the winter sports season.
I highly doubt a basketball or wrestling coach is going to let an athlete practice for a football game when they're in the middle of league play.
A better date would have been a week after the Central Coast Section finals, which this year would have been Dec. 12.
Football is still fresh in everyone's mind. Plus winter sports are just a month into their seasons. A week would have been all that would have been needed to play the game.
Plus, it's colder in the evening in January than December.
Moving the game up from July, however, could open up an opportunity for an overlooked kid to grap some college's attention.
