Weekend thoughts

We had some nailbitters, leaving some coaches with heart palpitations as three games were decided in the final minutes -- with Gonzales' Jose Lopez making a tackle at the goal line to preserve the win.

Strangest ending to a game in 35 years of covering high school sports when Woodside told officials it wasn't playing the fourth quarter in a 28-0 loss to Seaside, citing safety issues.

As bad as Monterey likely felt after a 41-0 loss to Marin Catholic, it's got to be sick to their stomachs this week after failing to hold a 21 point lead in a 36-33 loss to Pitman.

I applaud the decision of North Salinas coach Ben Ceralde to go for two and the win, rather than a tie and potential overtime. It didn't work. Yet, the faith he showed in his players won't be forgotten.

At one point in the first half, Carl Richardson had completed 14 straight passes, going 30-42 for 305 yards in the first 24 minutes alone for Salinas.

Big games for Treyvon Campbell, who rushed for three touchdowns in the first half for Seaside. Jonah Mendez rushed for two touchdowns and tossed one for King City. Josh Elmore fired a pair of touchdowns and ran for one for Monterey. Nico Torres returned an interception for a touchdown and brought back a punt 45 yards to six for North County.
