Friday's game
Soledad (2-0) at Gonzales (1-1), 7:30 p.m.
Last season the Spartans snapped a 10 year losing streak to their neighbors to the south to reclaim the Heritage Trophy en route to a school record 11-0 start.
This time it's Soledad that's off to a 2-0 start behind the arm of Damian Mejia, who has thrown four touchdown passes in two games -- three to Josiah Freeman.
The last time the Aztecs started a season 3-0, current Gonzales head coach Art Berlanga led the team in receptions in 2000.
Determined to get its ground game in order last week, Gonzales leaned on Jose Lopez, who rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Pacific Grove.
Quarterback Jose DeLeon added 75 yards and three touchdowns as well, as the Spartans chalked up over 300 rushing yards, resembling last year's attack.
A concern for Gonzales has to be mistakes, as three turnovers last week kept the game closer than the 21 point win.
While Soledad has racked up 70 points in two games, the defense has given up seven points, posting its first shutout in two years last week.
During the Aztecs runs to a Central Coast Section title in 2016 and a league title in 2017, it posted six shutouts.
