Saturday's game
King City (2-0) at Carmel (1-1), 2 p.m.
Having been involved in a game that saw the most yards combined by two teams in the state this fall isn't something Carmel wants to make a habit of.
The defensive deficiencies start with a lack of depth. More players are seeing action on both sides of the ball for the Padres.
The lack of size in the trenches was evident last week against a more physical opponent as the Padres gave up over 500 yards in rushing offense.
King City is off to its first 2-0 start since 2008, having outscored its first two opponents 68-6 behind defensive demon Francisco Sandoval.
The offense has been efficient, with just two turnovers. Quarterback Jonah Mendez has thrown for nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for three touchdowns.
Lost in the 69 points that Carmel allowed last week was quarterback Kai Lee throwing for 453 yards and five touchdowns, while leading the team with 56 rushing yards.
Three players had nearly 100 receiving yards, including J.T. Byrne, who caught eight passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns.
Carmel had six touchdowns last week of 25 yards or longer, including an 88-yard kickoff return from Benicio Cristofalo.
This has been a one-sided affair of late with the Padres having won the last 17 games, outscoring the Mustangs 114-25 the last two years.
