The former Seaside standout was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts for Sacramento State against Northern Colorado.
The 275-pound Choates is the first defensive player from Sacramento State to earn the award since 2010.
The senior defensive tackle recorded a season high six tackles for the Hornets, including four for losses. He also forced a pair of fumbles and broke up a pass.
One of Choates tackles resulted in a safety with under six minutes in the first half.
Through three games this fall, Choates has 12 tackles -- including a sack against Arizona State two weeks ago -- surpassing last year's season total. He has 70 tackles in his college career.
Choates was a member of The Herald's All-County football team a Seaside in 2014.
