Monterey-Alvarez football

Friday's game
Monterey (0-0) at Alvarez (0-0), 7:30 p.m.
Not since the days of Harold Lusk has Monterey felt comfortable throwing the ball on more than an occasion.
That is expected to change this fall. It has too if the Toreadores want to utilize all that speed on the outside -- where three-quarters of the state qualifying 400 relay team run post patterns.
You can't double all of them when Monterey is in the spread. Opponents can't risk bumping them at the line of scrimmage and watching them sprint past defenders.
Quarterback Josh Elmore has a season under his belt for the Toreadores. Don't discount the ground game as Janias Thomas will keep teams from adding a nickle back.
After scoring just 68 points in its first seven losses last year, Alvarez produced 56 in the teams final two games.
The Eagles were outscored 92-8 in the first quarter in their eight losses last fall. While the retooling continues, the growing pains have subsided.
The two teams have split their last six games, with Alvarez posting a 34-14 win in their last meeting in 2015.
