Friday's game
Monterey (5-1) at Pacific Grove (3-3), 7:30 p.m.
The Toreadores have put themselves in a position where they control their fate towards their first league title since 2012, as well as first winning season in four years.
In two Cypress Division games, Monterey has outscored opponents 66-6, with the six points allowed coming late in the fourth quarter.
Pacific Grove has struggled defensively in its last two games, having allowed 97 points. It is coming off its best offensive performance of the season in racking up 27 points in a loss to St. Francis.
Not having tailback Anthony DaSilva this week (concussion protocol) will hurt the offense for the Breakers. Expect Blake Moore and Dylan McClaren to fill in.
Adjustments in its run defense has been evident in the last two games for Monterey, who has allowed just 109 rushing yards. Last week it held King City to 1.2 yards per carry.
The Toreadores speed is a concern for any opponent, having produced eight touchdowns of 30 yards or longer. Tim Byrd has rushed for nine touchdowns.
Jumping out on teams has been Monterey's trademark, having outscored opponents 129-26 in the first half. Special teams has accounted for two touchdowns this year on blocked punts.
One quarter has grounded Pacific Grove in its last two games, having been outscored 14-0 in the third quarter two weeks ago and 28-0 in the fourth quarter last week.
