The top two ranked teams in Northern California -- both of which are ranked in the top 10 in the state as well -- just happen to be in the same conference.
Translation.
The biggest match of the fall and perhaps the last two decades unfolds for the Panthers Friday when they visit perennial state power Cabrillo.
Dating back to 2010, the Seahawks have not lost a Coast Conference match. In 2012, they posted a 31-0 record and a state championship.
Owners of 11 straight conference titles, Cabrillo has gone 108-1 during that span
Hartnell has had an historic start to its season at 17-2, having won 12 consecutive matches to climb to No. 8 in the state rankings.
The Panthers attack centers around Salinas product Sam Shaffer, who is 13th in the state in kills with 213, while Megan Gonzalez has 125 kills and 262 assists.
Gonzalez, who prepped at Carmel, is part of a two-set offense that includes Salinas grad Jahvannah Marinelli, who has 341 assists.
Defensively Alvarez alum Nhean Marquez has recorded 195 digs while Shaffer has tallied 144 and Esmeralda Nava 121 for the Panthers.
Former Alisal standout Nichole Gomez has been a menace in the middle of the net for Hartnell with 45 blocks this fall.
The Seahawks (15-2) offense starts with setter Kendra Lis, who leads the state with 585 assists. Four players have over 100 kills, including Kylie Kvam, who has over 200.
