Friday's game
Carmel (5-0) at Watsonville (4-1), 7:30 p.m.
For just the second time in a decade, the Padres were held scoreless in the first half last week in an eventual 14-0 win over Monte Vista.
Watsonville has held four opponents to 14 points or less in regulation play this fall, all of which have resulted in wins.
Keeping Carmel's offense off the field starts with the ability to control the clock. And the Wildcatz offense is geared just for that.
Of the 1,021 yards the Wildcats offense has produced this year, 991 has come on the ground. They have attempted 13 passes all year.
Prior to last weeks game, the Padres were averaging over 50 points a game behind quarterback Kai Lee and tailback Dakota Mornhinweg.
In nine career starters for Carmel, Mornhinweg has rushed for 1,048 yards and 19 touchdowns. That doesn't include his five receiving touchdowns.
The junior is a difference maker, having rushed for 640 yards, while compiling 13 touchdowns this fall for Carmel, who is undefeated in all nine games that he has played in.
Yet, the Padres defense won last week's game, recording 14 tackles for losses, with Robert Brown finishing with 12 tackles.
Carmel's front seven will be challenged again as Matthew Barceló has rushed for nearly 500 yards and 10 touchdowns for Watsonville.
While it would seem logical to stack the box with nine defenders, two of the teams three completions have gone for touchdowns this fall for the Wildcatz.
