Alvarez (1-6) vs. Palma (6-1) at Salinas High, 7:30 p.m.
The most remarkable stat about the Chieftains is they have turned the ball over just two times all season, making them plus 14 in turnover ratio.
The defense has two pick six's from Sam Lathos while Mateo Martinez has three picks and a special teams touchdown, returning a kickoff 93 yards.
Grant Sergent has not thrown an interception in his last 279 attempts dating back to last year. Palma is 12-3 in those games. Micah Olivas has caught multiple touchdown passes three times this year.
Yet, it would be foolish to assume that the Chieftains are going in a different direction. This is still an offense that revolves around tailback Anthony Villegas and his 800 rushing yards.
Villegas has had little work in the last three games. That will change as the playoffs get closer and games get tighter.
Alvarez has struggled on both sides of the ball since a Gabilan Division opening win, having allowed 127 points in its last three games.
The Eagles have lost to three teams that have currently won seven, five and three straight games. The retooling of this program is a process. Patience is being preached.
