Soquel (2-2) at Gonzales (3-0), 7:30 p.m.
When you're rolling, you hate to slow the momentum with a bye. Yet, the week off might have been good for Gonzales to heel up a few banged up bodies going into Santa Lucia Division play.
The Spartans matched last season's entire win total in the first three weeks of the year, outscoring the opposition 112-30.
Yet, the fast start should not have come as a complete surprise. Dating back to last year, Gonzales is 6-1 in its last seven games.
While the Knights record says 2-2, on the field they're 3-1, having had to forfeit one game because an ineligible player was discovered in a Week 1 blowout of Gunn.
Tanner Jones is a dual threat for Soquel behind center, while Darius Bedford has big play potential in the backfield, having scored touchdowns on the ground and threw the air.
Payton Flores is on pace for a 2,000 yard rushing season for Gonzales, having piled up 613 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
A threat out of the backfield with eight catches, Flores has also tossed two touchdown passes on two attempts.
Benefiting from the extra week off was quarterback Raul Morales, who has been nursing a sprained ankle since Week 2.
Morales is completing over 60 percent of his passes for 328 yards. Dominic Emery has 289 receiving yards and four touchdowns this fall for Gonzales.
The Spartans have been a second half team, having outscored the opposition 61-7. Anchored by Pablo Villasenor and Michael Duby, the defense has yet to allow a point in the fourth quarter.
This is also Gonzales' home opener.
