Barring a sudden change in health, the Padres will be pulling up a junior varsity setter tonight to help run the offense against reigning two-time Gabilan Division champion San Benito.
The Padres, one of two teams still undefeated in the Gabilan, lost one of their two setters in a five-set win over Notre Dame on Tuesday to concussion symptoms after she collided with the other setter.
Both were injured, with Emma Crabbe suffering a swollen wrist. Crabbe, however, was able to finish the match, recording a season high 50 assists as Carmel rallied to win the last two sets.
San Benito's lone league loss was in five sets to Salinas. Replacing four all-league starters has been a work in progress.
Even if Carmel keeps a two-set offense, Crabbe will likely get a majority of the passes, where she'll feed the likes of Soana Laolotu and Karoline Ruiz.
Laolotu is coming off a 20 kill, 16 dig effort while Ruiz compiled a career high 16 kills. Defensive specialist Kristin Cardinalli has stepped up and solidified the back row in big moments.
The two teams met twice last year in non-league play with San Benito posting a five-set win and a three-set nailbitter in a tournament.
