With the five Salinas high schools separated into two divisions for cross country this fall, the annual Salinas City Meet provides a little more anticipation -- or perhaps uncertainly today at Natividad Creek Park.
Behind distance standout Peter Maciel, defending Gabilan Division boys champion Alisal appears to be the early favorites to add a Salinas City Meet team title.
Who won't be back to defend his three-time City Meet boys title is Palma's Sam Lavorato, who is out for the season with a stress fracture. Which puts its chances of defending its title in jeopardy.
The girls division is a toss up with Salinas, Alisal and Notre Dame all in the hunt. Depth will decide the outcome.
Angela Leavitt is the favorite for Notre Dame while Salinas' Nicole Gorczyca and Alvarez's Valerie Cervantez are contenders for individual honors.
