Saturday's game
Gavilan (0-3) vs. Monterey Peninsula (2-0) at Gilroy High, 2 p.m.
The Lobos are the highest scoring team in the state, averaging 53 points a game this fall. It's possible that number could swell against a winless Gavilan squad.
MPC presents a balanced attack with running back Hunter Nye having rushed for 249 yards and four touchdowns, while catching a touchdown pass.
Quarterback Christopher Lubinsky has filled a void for the Lobos, throwing for nearly 500 yards and five touchdowns while completing over 61 percent of his passes, with no interceptions.
Isaiah Kearney has benefited from Lubinsky's accuracy with 14 catches for over 240 yards for MPC, while Caleb Countryman has turned two of his five receptions into touchdowns.
Defensively, Raymond Wingate has compiled 12 tackles and four sacks for MPC, with one fumble recovery, while Dalton Lykins and Carmel grad Jack Burke have combined for 25 tackles.
An opportunist Lobos defense has three pick six's this season, with Khiyree Keith returning a pair for touchdowns and Marquell Peggs taking an interception back 51 yards for six points.
The Rams are struggling offensively, averaging just over 11 points a game, having turned the ball over 12 times.
Quarterback John Ball has thrown for 545 yards, with Corey Garcia having caught 27 passes for 329 yards. On the ground, Gavilan is averaging 0.6 yards with each touch.
Dating back to 2016, Gavilan has dropped 16 straight games. MPC has won the last three meetings between the two long-time rivals.
