Saturday's game
Contra Costa (0-1) at MPC (1-0), 6 p.m.
Dating back to 2016, the Comets have dropped 11 straight games, falling 38-6 last week to Cabrillo in their opener.
Over the last two years Contra Costa is just 3-19. Prior to that, it had won two consecutive American Pacific 7 conference titles, posting a combined 19-3 record with one bowl win.
Quarterback Riley Lee was a bright spot for the Comets in their opener, throwing for 150 yards and rushing for 46.
Owners of back-to-back American Golden West conference titles, MPC used an 88 yard interception return from Khiyree Keith to secure a 41-34 win at Redwoods.
Offensively the Lobos racked up nearly 500 yards in total offense. Christopher Lubinsky was sharp behind center, throwing for 238 yards and four touchdowns.
MPC mixed it up well with Hunter Nye rushing for a career high 163 yards for MPC. He also caught five passes out of the backfield. Isaiah Kearney added nine catches for 148 yards.
While the Lobos front seven did a respectable job in shutting down Redwoods' run game last week, the defense as a whole gave up over 500 yards in passing offense. That can't continue.
Over 100 yards in penalties has to be corrected. And while MPC scored the games first 14 points last week, it didn't get on the scoreboard until the second quarter.
