Friday's game
Carmel (2-0) at King City (1-0), 7:30 p.m.
Both teams are coming off shutouts with the Padres posting a 58-0 win over North County and King City blanking Greenfield 34-0.
King City, which snapped an eight year season opening losing streak last week, will now look to end a streak of 11 straight losses to the Padres.
In fact, the last time the Mustangs defeated Carmel - 28-27 on a touchdown pass with no time left on the clock in 2006 - is the last time they reached the postseason.
King City's defense showed up last week with Devin Morales returning an interception 88 yards for a touchdown, holding the Bruins to 37 passing yards.
That's important, considering the Padres Kai Lee has thrown for 590 yards and eight touchdowns in the teams first two games.
Four players have multiple touchdown catches for Carmel, with Rashaan Ward having caught three scoring strikes on just six receptions.
The Padres also rediscovered their ground game last week with Dakota Mornhinweg rushing for 110 yards. The week before, he was held to just 16 yards, but had 113 receiving yards.
Quarterback Dylan Oliveros went over 100 yards rushing and tossed a 70-yard touchdown pass on the Mustangs first offensive play of the game last week.
Carmel has had four touchdowns of 75 yards or longer this year. Luke Melcher has a 90 yard kickoff return and an 82 yard touchdown catch.
The Padres defense has not allowed a point in their last six quarters. Offensively, their speed may be slowed somewhat by King City's thick natural grass field.
