Palma football

The outcome wasn't as important as what the film diagnosed.
Oh, all wins are big. But the Chieftains were suppose to beat Soledad.
Yet, two things left an impression with head coach Jeff Carnazzo.
The youth -- five sophomores -- stepped up in a season opening win. And Palma has an identity with its attack.
This is still an offense that will feed off of tailback Anthony Villegas. But opponents with ideas of making him the focal point better take a closer look at the film.
You can make the argument that no quarterback in the county has shown more improvement than the Chieftains Grant Sergent, who tossed four touchdown passes in the first half.
The senior had 11 touchdown passes in 12 games last year.
Sergent's progression actually began over the last five games of the 2017 season. Dating back to last year, he hasn't thrown an interception in 96 straight attempts.
Carnazzo said before the season started that Sergent looked more poised and confident, attributing part of it to a strong baseball season in the spring.
You can't stack the box against Villegas this season. Not that it did much good last year as the junior rushed for nearly 1,700 yards.
What the Chieftains possess this year at the skilled positions is speed. They're dangerous. Do doubt, bigger challenges are on the horizon. But they did just beat a defending league champion.
