Santa Catalina softball

While I would not say the Cougars have flown under the radar, it does feel like their 9-1 record has been somewhat brushed aside.
The argument of who have they played no longer exists after knocking off Pacific Grove last week. And it does have non-league wins over Pacific Division co leaders Alvarez and North Salinas.
Still Santa Catalina has flown under the radar this spring in its 7-0 league start -- the only undefeated team left in the Mission Trail Athletic League.
Which is a bit mysterious when you consider the program has finished first or second in the MTAL nine straight years -- producing five Division I players during that stretch.
Santa Catalina, which hosts Marina on Tuesday before its much anticipated showdown with Carmel on Wednesday, has outscored seven league opponents 76-18.
Emma James has evolved as the ace in the circle for the Cougars, with 54 strikeouts in 62 innings, posting a 2.21 earned run average.
James is getting guidance from the programs all-team leaders in wins and strikeouts in Alex Pingree, who is now the coach at Santa Catalina.
While Santa Catalina was already crushing the ball behind Iowa State bound Abby Gunter, the return of Jessica Clements solidifies a lineup that has four players hitting over .400.
Gunter is raking, hitting .559 while Emily Radner is stinging the ball at a .485 clip. Katie Fraley has been a run producing machine with 18 runs batted in and three homers.
Clements, an all-leaguer last year as a freshman, is hitting .462 in three games, with three of her six hits being extra bases.
