Three years removed from its only winning season in 2015, Salinas coach Andy Mandon has built a program around athletic players learning on the job.
Mandon, who took the Cowboys girls volleyball program to the state title match seven years ago, has a group that plays defense and passes the ball, anchored by setter Caden Zurita.
There's balance at the net with cross country standout Christoph Klemsz leading the team in kills, as well as digs.
Brothers David and Isaiah Orozco are getting more involved after a late arrival from an extended basketball season.
Salinas, which visits Palma tonight, has won five straight non-tournament games -- the last two by sweeps.
What it has to be cautious about is not looking ahead to Carmel -- owners of 31 straight league wins -- which is next on the calender in league play.
