As marks begin to climb and times drop, a handful of county athletes have inched their way into the Top 10 in the Central Coast Section.
Defending CCS pole vault champion Laurel Wong remains the top ranked vaulter in the state at 13-3 for Santa Catalina. The junior cleared 13-feet last weekend in winning the Top 8 Meet.
Coming off a school record leap of 36-8 in the triple jump, Avery Blanco moved into seventh in the section for the Cougars while Wong is eighth in the long jump.
Kate Riordan has jumped into the top five in the 300 low hurdles after blistering the track in 46.23 at the Bill Kearney Invitational.
Soledad foreign exchange student Noora Hautamaki sits in sixth in the long jump, yet just inches off the third slot at 18-feet.
Keep an eye on Marina sophomore Aliyah Carreras, who despite not having a track to practice on, is eighth in the 200 (25.86) and ninth in the 100 (12.61).
The top three at the section finals, slated for late May, earn automatic spots into the state meet.
Gonzales has not had a male athlete reach the state meet since Theotis Daniels qualified in the pole vault 18 years ago.
Three-sport standout Pablo Villasenor holds the third spot for now in the shot at 50-9. His throw of 143-9 in the discus last week catapulted him into seventh.
Alvarez sophomore VincentJordan Vanderlipe not only broke the school record in the pole vault, but his mark of 14-2 has him tied for third in the section.
