Marina-Santa Catalina softball

Jumping from the Coastal Athletic League to the Mission Trail Athletic League was a bold move for the Mariners to make this spring.
Last year Marina was 0-2 against two MTAL opponents, falling 12-0 in a play-in game for a playoff spot with Pacific Grove.
Yet, there is reason to believe the Mariners can compete, and it starts with scholarship bound pitcher Vivian Valencia.
The junior has allowed just two runs in her first two starts this year, as Valencia has been backed by a lineup that includes returning all leaguers Fia Atalima, Kai Aten and Na Leleua.
Santa Catalina does pack a punch at the plate, starting with sophomores Jessica Clement and Abby Gunter.
Both tore up MTAL pitching last year as freshmen. Emma Ubertino and Grace Atkins have both had multiple hit games this spring while Brooke Borgia has ripped a homer.
What's critical in the Cougars chase of a title is pitching. Its coach has no more eligibility, meaning someone in the dugout has to step up.
