Soledad basketball

Perhaps the Aztecs caught Pacific Grove at the right time, coming off a one-point win over Carmel. Or, just maybe they've finally arrived.
Because this is a team that believed before the season started that it could contend for league honors.
First year Soledad coach Nick Twitchel felt the team had lacked a quality win.
 Not any more.
Beating a reigning four-time league champion that came into the game with an eight-game winning streak will get people's attention.
 A fluke?
If you want to be next on Soledad's radar, keep thinking that way.
Soledad has arguably one of the top players in the Mission Trail Athletic League in Billy Hollman, who has been a double-double machine.
The 6-foot-6 senior erupted for 26 points -- more than half of Soledad's total in a 49-48 win. Yet, it was teammate Beto Tinajero demonstrating poise in hitting a free throw at the end to seal it.
It's not like Soledad hasn't been competitive this season. Inconsistent? Yes.
But this was a sign of a team maturing. It found a way to win a big game and put itself back into the conversation of a title.
