Friday's game
Placer (12-1) at Salinas (11-2), 7:30 p.m.
When your opponent has chalked up over 4,000 rushing yards, it's no secret what Salinas has to do to keep its magical season alive tonight.
Adjustments will be huge for the Cowboys, which they have done throughout their school record 10 game winning streak.
Through three quarters last week, Milpitas had 198 rushing yards. In the fourth quarter, it mustered just six as the Cowboys shut down Tariq Barcy and forced them to throw the ball.
Of course, Placer has two 1,000 yard running backs to deal with in Marshall Chapman and Mario Perez, both of which are averaging over six yards a carry.
And while the Hillman throw the ball with more accuracy than Milpitas, it's unlikely that they have faced a pass rush like Salinas' with Noah Habes and Nathan Martorella.
While both teams have high-powered offenses, neither wants to get in a shootout. Grind and chew up the clock is the objective. It clearly worked for the Cowboys last week.
That being said, Brett Reade's accuracy as a quarterback can not be ignored by Placer. The Gabilan Division's Most Valuable Player was clutch in big time moments last week.
Reade has either passed or rushed for nearly 2,800 yards and 30 touchdowns. That didn't happen by accident. That offensive line does a great job in protecting him.
And Jeff Weimer and Kelly McDermott both have good hands and are fearless in cutting across the middle on short to medium routes.
Bottom line is discipline and minimizing mistakes. Last week Salinas committed just five penalties while Milpitas was guilty of 15. Placer will be more disciplined than Milpitas.
