Gonzales boys basketball

Gonzales (3-19, 1-12)
In an effort to rebuild the foundation of the program, the Spartans are moving to the Coastal Athletic League this winter.
Just four years removed from a 10 win league season and a playoff appearance, Gonzales went 1-12 last year in the Mission Trail Athletic League, losing 19 games overall.
That will change in the CAL, where the Spartans are expected to contend, particularly with 6-foot-6 returning starter Pablo Villasenor in the middle.
The junior will be a force in the paint, where producing double-doubles could be on a nightly basis for the three-sport standout.
The expectation is Villasenor will see a lot of passes in the paint. He can also expect a lot of double teams, which means someone will likely be open on the perimeter.
Gonzales has to find players that can knock down the jump shot. Of course, with its quickness, look for them to get out in transition and create easy baskets.
Freddy Mendoza is a defensive specialist for Gonzales, that will create headaches for opponents in bringing the ball up court.
Ironically, Gonzales was winless last year against two teams from the CAL. However, those two teams have moved to the MTAL this winter.
