It's not uncommon to see a head coaching position in football open up. We have had at least one over the last 13 years.
But five in a span of three weeks.
Vacancies have crept up at Alvarez, Greenfield, Monterey, Monte Vista and North Salinas.
Two coaches were fired. Two stepped down and one retired.
Yet, when a coach says he stepped down for personal reasons, what does that really mean?
Not surprisingly all five openings are coming from programs that did not post winning seasons last year.
A coincidence?
I hope not.
Being a head football coach at the high school level has become an 11-month job. And it's still not enough for some programs.
The demands of a head coach today are insane, particularly when some schools are offering just three paid stipends.
Coaches never coach for the money. The time put in translates to about 25 cents an hour. Coaching is a passion. But without support, that passion fades fast.
