Seaside football

Seaside proved it could compete in the Gabilan Division this year. But can it sustain the rigors of a power league with its numbers in the future?
The Spartans were forced to shut down their freshman program because of a lack of numbers. They are one of two programs in the Gabilan without a freshman team.
Depth is an issue. It was noticeable in a pair of games this year when Seaside simply ran out of gas, failing to hold two second half leads against two powers.
Now the core of this years team is graduating, starting with arguably the best player in the county in DeMarcus Hawkins.
One opposing coach called Hawkins a one-man wrecking crew on both sides of the ball, rushing for over 1,500 yards and scoring 24 touchdowns, while compiling over 100 tackles on defense.
That's two spots to replace. There were a handful of players at Seaside that never came off the field that are seniors. That's a lot of positions to replace.
The Spartans aren't going down to a 'B' league. Monte Vista and North Salinas are the likely teams to drop down. Yet, what has gone down in the last three years are the Spartans numbers.
