Wednesday's match
No. 5 Notre Dame (10-10) vs. No. 1 Santa Catalina (23-0) at Watsonville High, 7:30 p.m.
A rematch of last year's CCS Division V finals, the defending champion Cougars have not lost to a team in the CCS in two years, a streak that stretches to 55 matches.
Santa Catalina has swept 21 of 23 opponents this year, needing less than an hour to dispose of Alma Heights in its playoff opener last Saturday.
Injuries and personnel decisions shook up Notre Dame four weeks ago. But a five-set win Saturday in the quarterfinals has kept its season alive.
The Cougars strength starts with four-year starting setter McKinley Fox, who orchestrates an attack at the net that includes Maria Santos, Saige Madden and Alicia Rector.
Defensively, the Mission Trail Athletic League champions don't let balls fall to the ground as Olivia Satow has compiled over 1,000 digs in her four year career.
The Spirits will rest their hopes on setter Spencher Hagenbuch, who will feed the ball to the likes of Logan Riggenbach and Meghan Amaral.
Notre Dame will have to play out of its minds defensively to keep up with Santa Catalina, who has virtually the same team that came within a win of playing for a state title last year.
