The last time both the Cougars and Notre Dame were prominent at the same time was in 2012 when both won league titles.
For now it's on-the-job training for both teams, whose core are non-seniors.
Notre Dame is showing signs of going in the right direction, having won two of its first three games behind sophomores Kelly Kinion and Grace Briley.
Kinion averaged nearly nine points a game last year as a freshman for the Spirits while Briley and Angela Leavitt were both brought up as freshmen last winter.
Leavitt was a late arrival, having reached the State Division V cross country championships for the second straight year.
The Cougars offense will revolve around sophomore post Abby Gunter, who has already verbally committed to play softball at Iowa State.
The 5-foot-10 Gunter opened her season with a 14-point effort. Emily Radner was among the team leaders in 3-point goals last year while Mia Bennett is a three-year varsity player.
