This weekends football frenzy
Friday's games
Greenfield at Soquel >> The Bruins have been outscored 118-22 in the first half in their six losses this fall. Quarterback Andy Hernandez needs 185 rushing yards and 142 passing yards to surpass 1,000 yards in both categories. Soquel has won three games by a total of 10 points.
Santa Cruz vs. Marina at Seaside High, 6 p.m. >> Two of Marina's top three all-time point totals have come in the last two games. Prior to that, it had gone 13 quarters without scoring. Winless in non-league play, the Cardinals are undefeated in the Pacific Division.
North Salinas at San Benito, 7:30 p.m. >> The Vikings have not scored in the first half in Gabilan Division play. They are just 2-9 since being moved back to the Gabilan. San Benito is averaging 30 points a game in five wins, 8.2 in three losses this fall.
St. Francis, Watsonville at Gonzales, 7:30 p.m. >> A bye, coupled with a postponed game means the Sharks haven't played a game since Oct. 6. They have allowed just 33 points in six wins. Seth Mays is coming off a 179 yard rushing effort for Gonzales.
Salinas at Alvarez, 7:30 p.m. >> The Cowboys have to be careful about looking ahead to their anticipated title showdown with Aptos in two weeks. Salinas has won five straight. Alvarez has dropped five straight.
Gilroy at Monterey, 7:30 p.m. >> The only undefeated team left in the southern section, Gilroy has outscored opponents 79-8 in the third quarter. Dating back to last year, Joseph Barnes has scored 36 touchdowns in 19 games for the Mustangs.
Seaside vs. Palma at Rabobank, 7:30 p.m. >> Owners of a CCS record 32 straight playoff appearances, Palma has been in playoff mood for two weeks after a 2-4 start. Seaside's decision to start Daniel Sayre at quarterback helped the ground game produce over 350 yards last week.
Alisal vs. Pajaro Valley at Watsonville High, 7:30 p.m. >> A win and Alisal is in the playoffs for just the fifth time in 52 years. It has never lost to Pajaro Valley. A win will also mean a three week break before the playoffs.
Saturday's games
Scotts Valley at Stevenson, 2 p.m. >> The Falcons have never lost to Stevenson, outscoring them 101-33 in four games. The Pirates have not scored a point in the first quarter in their four setbacks. Scotts Valley has managed just 10 points in its last two games.
King City at Carmel, 2 p.m. >> A league title isn't all that is at stake for the Mustangs. A loss by either team will likely keep them out of the postseason. Carmel has made 10 consecutive playoff appearances. The last time King City made the playoffs is the last time it beat the Padres in 2006.
Soledad at San Lorenzo Valley, 2 p.m. >> The Cougars have outscored opponents 153-9 in their four wins, but have scored just 58 points in four losses. Soledad's defense has not allowed a touchdown in the last 10 quarters. Since starting 0-2, the Aztecs are 5-1. Last year they started 0-2 and finished 10-1 with a section title.
Anzar vs. Trinity at Monterey High, 2 p.m. >> These two teams will meet again next week in a bowl game in eight-man football. The winner will likely host the game. Christopher Wright scored six touchdowns last week for the Warriors, two on defense.
Hartnell at West Hills, 1 p.m. >> Held together with duck tape, the Panthers are three plays away from potentially being 7-0 instead of 4-3. West Hills has lost three games by a total of 13 points. Angel Maldonado is among the state leaders in sacks with 8 1/2.
Redwoods at MPC, 6 p.m. >> Hunter Nye is coming off a 278 yard rushing effort for the Lobos. MPC has created 21 turnovers and is plus five in turnover ratio. The Lobos have won five straight games while Redwoods snapped a four-game losing streak last week.
