Friday's game
Salinas (1-2) at Seaside (3-0), 7:30 p.m.
For the third straight week, the Cowboys are facing a team that has not tasted defeat on the field. The results of the first two weren't encouraging, having been outscored 55-17.
Seaside has started slow in its last two games, trailing by seven and 11 points before mounting huge second quarter comebacks, outscoring both teams 43-0.
Both teams have dealt with key players missing for various reasons. That's not expected to change this week.
The Cowboys have struggled defending teams with good speed. Seaside has speed on the outside and a quarterback in Ivan Ochoa, who has thrown 583 yards and seven touchdowns with no picks.
Meaning you can't stack eight in a box in an attempt to stop 218-pound tailback DeMarcus Hawkins, who has rushed for 450 yards and scored eight touchdowns.
Hawkins, who is being recruited as a defensive end, is also a pass rushing demon with four sacks, including a safety.
In its season opener, Salinas outscored its opponent 28-0 in the first half. But in its two losses, it has been outscored 41-0 in the first 24 minutes.
After averaging over 200 yards on the ground in their first two games, the Cowboys were held to 34 last week by a Milpitas team that has given up six points all year.
The Cowboys are an up-tempo offense that prefers to wear you down with a punishing ground game behind Ritchie Cerda and Mike Cortez. Both were bottled up last week.
This battle could boil down to discipline. Who will have it in big moments? Seaside has forced eight turnovers in three games.
