Carmel-Soledad football

Friday's game
Carmel (2-2) at Soledad (2-2), 7:30 p.m.
 All those concerns about both teams' poor starts have been cast aside for the moment.
 The reigning Mission Trail Athletic League champion Padres tuned up for their league opener with a 40-0 win while defending CCS Division IV champion Soledad powered its way to a 41-0 win.
 Soledad's two setbacks this year have come from opponents that are 6-1, while the Padres two non-league losses are to teams a combined 8-0.
 Carmel's defense has intercepted 10 passes, with J.T. Byrne returning one for a pick six. Yet, up until last week, that defense had given up three straight 100 plus yard rushing games to an individual
 Coming off a single-season school rushing record, Emmanuel Ortega has been a workhorse for the Aztecs with 648 yards and seven touchdowns this fall.
 Moving Robbie Santa Ana back to quarterback has paid off as he has thrown for nearly 400 yards in three games. Angel Olivas has caught 11 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns.
 The Padres offense has centered around junior tailback Luke Melcher, who has rushed for over 350 yards and four touchdowns while catching 16 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
 Sophomore quarterback Kai Lee is completing over 60 percent of his passes for Carmel, with a third of his completions going to Rashaan Ward.
 Carmel has outscored opponents 33-6 in the first quarter while the Aztecs have been outscored 30-20 in the first 12 minutes.
