Salinas football

Six hour meetings with his staff on a Sunday normally isn't something Steve Zenk wants.
Yet, the first year Salinas coach made one mandatory last week.
"I just wanted to be sure we were all on the same page,'' Zenk said. "I asked them 'are we putting the kids in the best possible position to be successful?'
Zenk isn't afraid to absorb the blame when things don't well. Clearly, the previous two weeks had not gone as planed in facing double-digit deficits in the first half.
Granted, the two teams Salinas had fallen to are a combined 8-0 on the field. Yet, shutout for the first time in five years warranted a look in the mirror.
The Cowboys responded against another undefeated team, this time with a season high 47 points in a 26-point pasting of Seaside.
This time when the Cowboys found themselves trailing 7-6, they responded with 15 straight points in a span of 36 seconds in the second quarter, highlighted by Mason Hunter's pick six.
Salinas ran the ball to a tune of 338 yards, with Ritchie Cerda and quarterback Brett Reade piling up over 100 yards rushing apiece and Mike Cortez chalking up 92.
Zenk has a desire to run the ball more this fall. Salinas got away from that in its last two games when it fell behind. Perhaps the discovery of patience was just as critical as performance.
