Anytime the Chieftains lose it's news. Two straight losses to open a season and it's magnified.
With good reason. It's only happened three times in 30 years. Of course, two of those have occurred in the last two years.
There was no panic last year in an eventual 10 win league championship season. And there should be none this season.
There is no shame in falling to a state finalist in Menlo-Atherton and a section power in St. Francis.
Concerns?
Well the offense is staggering. The reality is Palma has produced just two touchdowns -- one coming on the final play of a game.
It won't get easier this week with Menlo.
For three plus decades, we've watched this machine mythically manufacture points and wins.
It's not happening right now.
That's leaving the defense on the field a long time. And we're seeing the results as Palma has allowed 70 points in two games -- 30 in the second quarter alone.
During its 10 game winning streak last year, it allowed 32 points in the second quarter.
I don't know if changes are in order as much as it is growing into their roles. Eight new starters are on one side of the ball, seven on the other.
Just putting on the uniform doesn't automatically translate to wins.
