Saturday's game
Monte Vista (2-1) vs. North Salinas (1-2) at Rabobank, 3:30 p.m.
Both teams are coming off gut-wrenching losses in the final minutes -- or in the Vikings case -- the final seconds last week.
Both offenses like to put the ball in the air as Sean White has thrown for nearly 600 yards and eight touchdowns for the Mustangs, with Nick Bautista having caught five of those scoring tosses.
Anthony Aguilar has thrown for 641 yards, with all four of his touchdown passes having gone to Ritchie Reyes, who has 25 catches on the season.
The Vikings offense flows better when tailback Tim Hunter gets involved running the ball, while Cody Paresa has rushed for 398 yards and three touchdowns for Monte Vista.
The second quarter has been a turning point for the Mustangs, who have outscored opponents 42-7. North Salinas has managed just 22 points in the first half this year.
While a league title may be a stretch for either team, the playoffs are not with five teams coming out of the Gabilan. That adds to the significance of this league opener.
