The Maxpreps computer model says:

1.) Salinas (195)
2.) Aptos (216)
3.) Hollister (267)
4.) Christopher (289)
5.) Palma (314)
6.) Seaside (353)
7.) Gilroy (368)
8.) Scotts Valley (390)
9.) Soledad (481)
10.) MVC (498)

On the bubble: Alvarez (585), Carmel (613), St Francis CC (660), Watsonville (661) and King City (668)

The number in the ( ) represents the school's ranking among the 1,043 11 man football teams playing in California. So MVC's (498) means they rank just below the 50th percentile of California schools.

So with that in mind schools ranked between 1 and 104 are in the top 10% of schools in California. So teams within 104 of each other are in the same decile. Games against two teams in the same decile (whose state ranking is within 104 of each other) are very likely to be "too close to call". But games between two teams like Christopher (289) and King City (668) where the difference between their state rank is greater than 104 says the better ranked team should be favored...in the case of Christopher and King City the 379 point difference suggests King City would require a miracle to win the game.

What I find interesting is that our area's best ranked team (Salinas) is the 195th best team in the state and while the top five teams might be competitive, there is a very big difference between even Palma and Soledad. Don't expect the games between the top five teams in the area and teams in the bottom part of the next five to be very competitive.

Now having said all this, each week the model gets more data and rankings change. We will see what this looks like when we reach week 10.
