Football notes

Friday's games
Soledad at Antioch, 7 p.m.: The heat will be a factor as temperatures are expected to be around 102 degrees at kickoff. With Labor Day weekend traffic, this could be a four hour bus ride for Soledad.

North Salinas at Mountain View, 7 p.m: Struggling to stop the pass last week, the Vikings will deal with an opponent that runs the ball effectively, rushing for five touchdowns last week.

Seaside vs. Monterey at MPC, 7:30 p.m.: A big rivalry game in Week 2 seems odd. Then again, these teams played an overtime thriller in Week 3 of the 2015 season.

Alisal at Alvarez, 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans were starring at a 20-point deficit before waking up last week. Alvarez was up by 20 points 15 minutes into its 40-point season opening win.

Oak Grove at Salinas, 7:30 p.m.: The Eagles have dropped just three games in the last two years to teams in the CCS. All three have been WCAL opponents.

Palma at St. Francis, 7:30 p.m.: History tells us this will be defensive minded and close with four of the last eight meetings being decided by five points or less.

North County at Monte Vista, 7:30 p.m.: The Mustangs erupted for 37 points in their opener last week. North County is still looking for its first points.

Pacific Grove at Orestimba, Newman, 7:30 p.m.: Expect an aerial assault from the Warriors, who threw for 338 yards last week. Pacific Grove ran just 30 plays last week.

Coalinga at Gonzales, 7:30 p.m.: Establishing the ground game is a must for Gonzales. You can't ask your defense to spend three quarters of the game on the field.

Saturday's games
Stevenson at Menlo, 10 a.m.: The Knights are coming off a 16-9 loss to a East Nicolaus program that played for a state title last year. Stevenson may not face a better team this year.

Gilroy at Carmel, 2 p.m.: Could the winner of this game be ticketed to the Gabilan next fall? The Padres will not face a better running back tandem this season.

Greenfield vs. Pajaro Valley at Cabrillo, 7:30 p.m.: The Grizzlies have won the last four meetings. In eight career showdowns, there have been two ties.

Rincon Valley vs. Trinity at Monterey High, 2 p.m.: The Warriors are looking for redemption after falling 19-12 last year to a 8-1 Rincon Valley squad.

MPC at Yuba, 6 p.m.: Yuba was just 3-7 last year, falling 25-0 to the Lobos. Dating back to 2015, MPC has won 12 of its last 13 games. Yuba turned the ball over three times in last year's game.

Hartnell at Foothill, 7 p.m.: The Owls were winless at home last year. Hartnell, who has been to four straight bowl games, is looking to snap a three-game losing streak that ended last fall.
