Palma graduate Jay Burlison and former North Salinas and softball Olympian Monica Abbott call Houston home for part of the year.
Abbott is back in town after hurling the Houston-based Scrap Yard Dawgs to a professional fastpitch softball title 11 days ago, striking out 25 in her final 14 innings of work.
Burlison, who golfs on the Rice University team, also escaped when his coach told all the players to get out of town, flocking to Austin.
"It's devastating to see the damage, but uplifting to see the response of the community, said Abbott, by text.
Burlison isn't sure what he'll return to when he and his teammates get back to campus. School will be closed until next Wednesday because of flooding throughout the campus and apartments.
"I'm just glad he got out of town before the storm hit,'' said his brother Joey, a senior this year at Palma.
