Thursday's game
Piedmont Hills (0-0) vs. North Salinas (0-0) at Rabobank, 7:30 p.m.
One thing the Pirates aren't shy about is airing it out, having averaged nearly 3,000 passing yards in making four straight postseason appearances.
Last fall Piedmont Hills opened its season with a 28-12 win over North Salinas. All five of its losses last year came from teams that reached the playoffs.
One target back for the Pirates is Jessie Flaris, who caught 34 passes for three touchdowns last fall as a sophomore.
Both teams are breaking in new quarterbacks. Anthony Aguilar was sharp in his debut at the Salinas City Jamboree for the Vikings, completing 15-of-24 for 171 yards and two scoring strikes.
Richard Reyes is coming off a 45 catch season for North Salinas while Tim Hunter could be the most explosive player on the roster.
Outscored 99-47 in the first quarter last year, the Vikings can't afford to wait until the second quarter to get moving. Eight teams on their schedule went to the playoffs last season.
