Thursday's game
Mountain View (0-0) at Monterey (0-0). 7:30 p.m.
Both teams closed last season with three straight losses, with the Spartans falling in the Division II playoffs St. Francis.
Last year Mountain View opened its season with a 56-15 win over the Toreadores, its largest point production of the season.
Prior to last year's meeting, the last time these two teams played was in the 1997 CCS Division III playoffs with Monterey prevailing 14-7.
With a full season under his belt, quarterback Evans Charles looks much more comfortable running the Monterey offense.
An improved ground game will include sophomore Azjani McGill, who will be arguably the fastest player on the field.
A cast of unknowns will look to solidify the defense for Monterey, who gave up 40 or more points in four losses last fall.
The third quarter was a thorn in the Toreadores side all season as they were outscored 70-15 in their seven losses.
